Effect of high-level fish meal replacement by plant proteins in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) on growth and body/fillet quality traits ArchiMer
De Francesco, M; Parisi, G; Perez Sanchez, J; Gomez Requeni, P; Medale, Francoise; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Mecatti, M; Poli, B.
Juvenile gilthead sea bream (initial body weight ca. 100 g) were reared in an indoor flow through marine water system for 1 year. Fish were fed two isoenergetic [19.2 kJ g−1 dry matter (DM)] and isoproteic (426 g kg−1 DM) diets either based on fish meal (diet FM) or on a mixture of plant protein sources (diet PP), replacing 75% of fish meal protein. The growth trial was conducted in duplicate, two tanks for each dietary treatment. Growth performance and feed utilization were registered. Fillet quality parameters were evaluated and sensory analyses on cooked fillet were performed. Both groups had similar weight gain and specific growth rates. Feed intake was higher in sea bream fed diet FM (0.48 versus 0.44), while feed efficiency and...

Effect of the culture system and culture technique on biochemical characteristics of Pavlova lutheri and its nutritional value for Crassostrea gigas larvae ArchiMer
Ponis, Emanuele; Parisi, G; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Robert, Rene; Zittelli, G; Tredici, R.
Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in carboys using batch technique and in a flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP), using initially batch and then semi-continuous techniques. Growth and productivity of the cultures were compared and their nutritional quality was assessed by analysing their biochemical composition (gross composition, fatty acids and sterols) and by evaluating their food value for Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae as bispecific diet in association with Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum. The highest productivity was achieved with the FAP operating in semi-continuous mode. Gross composition of P. lutheri was similar in all cultures, while cellular organic matter content of the microalga grown in FAP in semi-continuous mode was lower....

Pavlova lutheri: Production, preservation and use as food for Crassostrea gigas larvae ArchiMer
Ponis, Emanuele; Parisi, G; Chini Zittelli, G; Lavista, F; Robert, Rene; Tredici, M. R..
The haptophyte Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in a 4-l flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP) in semi-continuous mode during 35 days, achieving a mean volumetric productivity of 0.4 g l-1 day-1. The microalgal culture was harvested from the photobioreactor at an average concentration of 3.5 g l-1 and subjected to different storage conditions in which the effects of temperature (1 °C, 4 °C and 25 °C), air supply and preservative (ascorbic or propionic acid) addition on the viability of the stored suspensions were investigated. Low temperatures (1 and 4 °C) and air-bubbling extended the shelf-life of the stored suspension, while no beneficial effects of ascorbic or propionic acid were found. The influence of temperature and air-bubbling on fatty acid content...
